Defending your PhD thesis

The PhD manuscript is reviewed by at least two external reviewers. The PhD defense is authorized by the head of the institution where the PhD student is enrolled in agreement with the reviewers and the director of the doctoral school. 

The administrative procedure for the defense depends on the institution where you are enrolled (Université Lyon 1, INSA de Lyon ou VetAgroSup) and requires at least 10 weeks.

Beforehand

1) Check the administrative procedure for PhD defenses of the institution where you are enrolled

2) Check that the EDISS requirements for a PhD defense are met 

 Training requirements 

  • 1 training module on research ethics (mandatory for all PhD student)
  • 40 hours of professionnal skills divided into 2 courses of at least 20 hours each OR into one course of at least 20 hours and two courses of at least 10 hours.


Publication requierements 

  • Two research articles, one of them being signed as the first or co-first author by the PhD student
or
  • One research article signed by the PhD student as the first or co-first author and one review article or a patent on a work different from the work included in the publication signed as the first author by the PhD student. 
Please check the number of requested reviewers (2 or 3) with EDISS before sending the proposal of reviewers and jury to your institution if you have any doubt.


Please note :
  • The articles, written in English, must be published, accepted or submitted for publication in international peer-reviewed journals
  • At least one of the articles must be published or accepted for publication but not necessarily the research article signed as the first or co-first author by the PhD student
If one of the two articles is not accepted for publication or published when the defense application file is submitted to EDISS, three reviewers are required instead of two.

Signature of the proposal for reviewers and jury members (Plan a one-week delay)


The proposal of reviewers and jury members is drafted by Pôle PhD-HDR (University Lyon 1), or by the FEDORA Department (INSA de Lyon) or by VetAgroSup.
It should be signed by the PhD supervisor and sent to the secretariat (secretariat.ediss@univ-lyon1.fr) and to the Director of EDISS (sylvie.ricard-blum@univ-lyon1.fr) with the following documents :
  • The proposal of reviewers and jury signed by Supervisor
  • The full and final text of the articles, which are published, accepted for publication or submitted for publication (version generated on the journal website during the submission process in the latter case)
  • The e-mails from the journals acknowledging receipt or acceptance of the submitted manuscript where necessary (no screenshots of the journal website)
  • Certificates of attendance to the training courses followed during the PhD including the number of training hours. If the number of hours is not indicated on the certificate, please send the training program with the number of training hours. 
  • The abstract accepted for an oral or a poster presentation at JEDISS, the nature and the date of the presentation
  • The skills portefolio completed and signed by the PhD student and the PhD supervisor for PhD students enrolled in their first year of PhD in 2020-2021 and after
Incomplete applications will not be examined.
