Defending your PhD thesis

The work performed by the PhD students during their PhD is reviewed by at least two external referees. The president or director of the institution where the PhD student is enrolled authorizes the PhD defense based on the recommendation of the referees and of EDISS director.

PREREQUISITES REQUIRED BY EDISS FOR THE PhD DEFENSE


Training

•A training course on ethics in research (compulsory for all PhD students),

 At least 40 hours of training divided into 2 courses of at least 20 hours each oR into one course of at least 20 hours and two courses of at least 10 hours each.

 

Publications

•The articles, written in English, must be published, accepted or submitted for publication in international peer-reviewed journals,
•Two research articles, one of which signed as 1st or co-1st author by the PhD student oR one research article signed as 1st or co-1st author by the PhD student and a review article or patent on a different work that the work reported in the research article signed as 1st author by the PhD student
At least one of the two articles must be published or accepted for publication, but not necessarily the resaerch article signed as 1st or co-1st author by the PhD student,
•If one of the two articles is not yet accepted for publication when the application is sent to EDISS, three referees are required instead of two. If you have any doubt, please check with EDISS the number of reviewers required (2 or 3) before uploading the proposal of referees and jury on ADUM or before sending it to yout registration institution.

DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE PhD DEFENSE TO SEND TO EDISS DIRECTOR

PhD students must send to the Director and secretary of EDISS (sylvie.ricard-blum@univ-lyon1.fr, secretariat.ediss@univ-lyon1.fr), the documents required by EDISS and their registration institution for validation and signature by EDISS BEFORE uploading them in their ADUM file or sending them to their registration institution.

Documents required by EDISS

  • Certificates of completion for each training course, indicating the number of hours attended (not a summary of courses taken).
  • Full text of articles submitted, accepted for publication and published with the e-mails from the journals acknowledging receipt of the submission or of the acceptance of the manuscripts where applicable
  • The abstract, extracted from the book of abstracts, of the oral or poster communication made at the annual scientific day of EDISS (JEDISS)
  • The e-mail from the JEDISS organizers indicating that the abstract has been accepted for a short talk or a poster presentation
  • The skill portfolio signed by the PhD supervisor and the PhD student, including specific examples of how the skills indicated have been acquired.

Institutional forms to be signed by EDISS where applicable

  • Form requesting confidentiality and/or closed-door defense signed by the PhD supervisor and the director of the research unit (University Lyon 1)
  • Form requesting videoconferencing signed by the PhD supervisor (University Lyon 1)
  • Form for thesis defense outside Lyon 1 premises signed by the PhD supervisor and the director of the research unit (University Lyon 1)
